Eeeep eeep! Blam Blam! Whoooeeeee! Great fun learning how to program when creating games with Scratch! Join the worldwide community of millions of Scratch programmers and be part of the makers. Learning how to program in Scratch prepares the learner for all other programming languages. Learners will be able to visualize programming structures – and learning how to visualize fundamental in problem solving, not only in Computer Science and Engineering but in any science including medical and environmental.
The Game Programming classes have been reorganized to allow a slow and gentle introduction to programming for the Junior Levels. Children will learn basic navigation, file management and how to use the Scratch development environment. It is recognized that many parents do not know programming and cannot help their children, so the lesson plans have been rewritten to fit the needs of absolute beginners.
Children will dive into programming games with step by step instructions. Fortunately Scratch’s visual drag and drop programming makes it a joy to learn. Programs and graphics can be saved to flash drives and taken home!
Children will be asked to duplicate what we do in class, at home. No new material will be assigned for homework as we will practice fundamentals.
Scratch is similar to visual RobotC, thus anyone with VEX IQ kits, or LEGO Mindstorms, would benefit hugely from taking this camp. In fact we hope all participants will proceed to Robotics classes and camps.
There are four levels of Brickineers Game Programming in Scratch classes: (1) Junior Level 1, (2) Junior Level 2, (3) Senior Level 1, (4) Senior Level 2, (5) Advanced Game Programming. Generally classes are 5 to 6 weeks in duration. Participants will earn the “Game Programming in Scratch” certificate.
In the Lost Interview with Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder said, “I think everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.”
