Welcome to the newest Brickineers Engineering Camp for Elementary Students Grades 2-5!
Elementary Engineering Locomotion
This summer we look at locomotion: the act or power of moving from place to place. Linear and rotational force, energy, power, friction, gears and more will be discussed in simple easy to understand terms. This camp is 4 days only leaving Friday open for other summer activities.
First we will investigate energy, gravity and friction before moving on to using simple machines as the power source for a lever car. Following lever cars, rubber band racers augmented with gears will then astound everyone at how fast they move. Next we will build crawlers and walkers using Power Function motors and batteries. Assembly of Power Function motorized remotely controlled cars will kick off the battery operated vehicles segment of the camp. We will then learn how to modify Lego cars in order to motorize them and contemplate the why’s and how’s of power train, steering and chassis design and power versus speed factors. Tracked racers will be pitted against wheeled racers in obstacle courses. Educational material in the camp will be adjusted for appropriate grade levels.
Campers will also construct obstacle courses made of cardboard and paint background scenery to balance the weeklong activities between art and science thinking.
Children from grades 2 to 5 are welcome, learning tasks will be adjusted according to grade level.
Brickineers classes and camps are based on the principles of experiential peer learning, and it is important that children have similar arithmetic knowledge and social skills, so that they can share and build from a common foundation at a pace that all can enjoy.
