Welcome to the Brickineers LEGO Boost Robotics Class for Grades 1-3!
Brickineers classes are motivating and engaging and have become the weekly highlight of many youngsters! We use the Lego Boost Robotics system to learn about basic structured programming, simple measurement and data analysis and how geometry is used to plan routes.
This class is useful for families with young children who have or are considering using BOOST or another robotics system as a home-based science learning aid.
This class is also for your child if:
1) Your child is not being challenged and needs to engage with like-minded peers.
2) Your child is not being given the opportunity in school to engage in robotics which encompasses engineering and science.
3) Your child is homeschooled and needs a science class.
Each child will have access to their own computer station where they will learn how to develop programs to control the Boost robot. Boost is a great fit for, at the very least, Grades 1 to 6 as the robotics kit has the optimal number of motors and sensors for learners to learn and practice important fundamentals. Boost also has a visual programming language that despite being easy to learn and use, but also capable of complex control.
We will use “clawbots” which are Boost robots built to acquire and carry target items. Children will learn basic programming instructions that will enable them to accomplish tasks such as controlling the robot to move along defined paths, locate a coloured object and return to the starting position. As children become more familiar with programming the challenges will become more complex, like pretending to explore Mars! We will also play robot games like ‘tag’ and ‘relay race’. It’s a great way to get your young child motivated to use logic and arithmetic to solve problems in a peer ‘play and learn’ environment
Classes are based on the principles of experiential peer learning, and it is important that children have similar arithmetic knowledge and social skills, so that they can share and build up from a common foundation at a pace that all can enjoy. This speaks to the reason why these classes do not involve children from all the elementary grades. Learners will become familiar with mechanical terminology, basic programming, applied math and science, and patience with troubleshooting.
