A Warm Welcome to the Zoobots Summer Camp! Kindergarten to Grade 2
Brickineers Zoobots camps have been ongoing for the past five years and are very popular! Kids flock to this camp as they love animals and enjoy building their robotic equivalents. Children love to assemble interesting robotic animals (Zoobots) and position them in enclosures that are models of real habitats; just like real zoo animals that are sequestered in zoo pads and enclosures at the Calgary Zoo.
Every child will have opportunity to not only learn how gears, motors and sensors work together to create movement, but also how to computer control simple actions. It’s fun to add an element of art by incorporating colourful Lego pieces into the design. A robotic roaring lion in grassland or a giraffe eating leaves off of a tall tree! Birds, hippopotami, seals, penguins, alligators – all kinds of zoobot animals can be created. There’s even a Venus Fly Trap that acts like an animal as it eats bugs.
Young children co-play, and co-play is recognized as being an important first step towards teamwork. To facilitate co-play, learners are grouped in pairs and placed at one table, or in close proximity to each other, so that each child can help the other during building and programming times. It’s also nice for a learner to have someone nearby to show off to.
To break up engineering time we also have craft time during which we paint background walls and assemble our zoos enclosures. We will also have playtime during which the children can play with their robots in the enclosures.
